THE JOY OF KNOWING THE TRUTH
Fr Mike Schmitz, the number 1 podcaster of the Bible in a year said in an interview that he used to have doubts about some aspects of his Catholic Faith. He explained that there was a time when he would have been quite critical about certain Catholic beliefs and teachings but when he finally realised that his understanding was wrong and the Church was right, he felt a joy in knowing the truth. “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:32).
In the story of the Prodigal Son, the eldest son was the ideal son compared to the younger one. The elder son, having it all, lived oblivious to the fact that He had everything he needed but never acknowledged the privileges he enjoyed in the father’s house. Having never left all that the father provided, he lived in ignorant bliss and didn’t acknowledge the preciousness of what he had. But for the younger son, losing all he had was an eye opener. The elder son believed he was in the right and couldn’t see that his view of things was wrong. At times we all require a light bulb moment in our lives.
Do we take our faith for granted? How often do we feel such negative thoughts about our faith? Are we stuck on something that hinders our relationship with Jesus? In this New Year let us examine what is stopping us from growing in our faith and let us explore and reflect on what the Church teachings and traditions have to offer to help us grow stronger in our faith.
